Case Study: #metoo hashtag

as a Social Media Campaign

Numerous people think that #metoo hashtag appeared quite recently. However this  is not the case. The #metoo hashtag first appeared in 2006, long before the accusations against Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein. The movement gained global support and popularity over a decade later in 2017. Despite empowering millions of people, it also triggered dramatic events, permitted “side-effect” and other kinds of controversies, such as #himtoo and false accusation. Therefore, the intention of this  paper is to  analyze the #metoo movement and re-discover how it became a modern social symbol with resilient philosophies and widespread impact on individuals and society.

In order to study the #metoo phenomena, We will be analyzing the movement through the prism of social theories: on a macro sociological level we will evaluate the #metoo through “Symbolic Power” theory developed by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu.

The #metoo phenomena created new reality and empowered individuals and groups worldwide, therefore Bourdieu’s definition of Symbolic Power - “is a power of constructing reality,” finds its reflection.

Furthermore, in search for a better analysis and understanding of the processes that triggered and transformed the #metoo movement into a viral social media campaign across the planet and its individual impact, on a micro level, we will evaluate the movement through “Symbolic Interactionism.” This theory was initially created by George Herbert Mead and further developed by his follower Herbert Blumer in his work “Society as symbolic interaction”.

Blumer’s concept is based on the fact that all human interactions in society imply communication based on certain social symbols. He considered that people act on the basis of specific values individuals attach to objects and events. Rather than simply reacting to an external stimuli, social values develop and change during social interaction. “Human beings interpret or ‘define’ each other’s actions instead of merely reacting to each other’s action” (Blumer p 1).

The anticipated result of this paper ought to be much advanced understanding of the #metoo phenomena....Contact us to read full research:
