2020 is Online



In 2020 information spreads the world with unseen rapid. We get, exchange, analyze, and disseminate data at one click, making this speed a new 'usual'. The digital, mobile, and social networks have become an integral part of our routine, giving us a possibility to keep a finger on the pulse on anything happening in the world, from coronavirus outbreaks statistics to the stock market falling indexes.


That's why we have analyzed the report Digital 2020 - Global Digital overview by Hootsuite to reflect the trending tendencies and overwhelming statistics on online trading, internet usage, and social media presence.


#1 People using the Internet and social networks around the globe:

The number of Internet users in 2020 reached 4.54 billion people - in 2019, this was 4.38 billion

The audience of social networks in 2020 totals 3.80 billion people - compared with 3.484 billion last year

The number of mobile phone users is 5.19 billion, compared with 5.11 billion last year.



#2. On average, each user spends 6 hours and 43 minutes a day online, of which 2 hours and 24 minutes are on social networks, which is more than a third of the total time on the Internet:

For comparison, people spend 3 hours and 18 minutes watching TV, 1 hour 26 minutes listening to music, and 1 hour 10 minutes playing video games.



#3. Different forms of content capture the audience differently:

90% of users watch videos

51% are interested in watching video blogs

70% of users listen to music on streaming services

47% listen to radio online

41% listen to podcasts



#4. Web Traffic by the device:

Users are mostly mobile while going online. The share of mobile traffic has not changed globally since 2017 - most people continue to use both smartphones and desktop to access the Internet.



#5. Online users have become more conscious. Misinformation and inappropriate use of personal data started bothering a lot of people: 56% and 64% of users accordingly:



#6. Social media:

3,8 billion people are active social media users. 97% of them use social networks or instant messengers consistently. 69% of North America's users have SM accounts, which is 3.1% more than last year. On average, people spend 2 hours and 24 minutes a day on social networks. One user has an average of 8-9 accounts in various social networks. 43% of users use social networks at work.



#7. Most people use Facebook, Youtube and WhatsApp. Instagram in 6th place, TikTok in seventh:



#8. Ecommerce:

90% of users go online for the next purchase, and the fashion & beauty category is the most growing one, with +18% in comparison to 2019.



#9. Global Digital advertising market was estimated at $334 bln, which is 12% more than the year before:



So, it is wrong to assume that your target audience is not on the Internet and social networks. There are people of any age, gender, and social status on the other side of the screen. When people are awake, half of that time they spend online, so SMM promotion is as vital as it has never before. Make sure to take care of it earlier than your competitors.
